UW Art Museum Spring Exhibitions Open Feb. 13

February 12, 2015

The opening of the spring exhibitions, including a juried student exhibition, will be on display during a free public reception at the University of Wyoming Art Museum Friday, Feb. 13, from 6-8 p.m.

Exhibitions opening are: “Face Value: Embroidered Found Photographs” by Jane Waggoner Deschner; “Language as Art: The Art Museum Collection”; “Ley Lines: Intersecting Conversations”; and “The Art of Disguise: Cultural Masks from the Art Museum Collection.”

Also opening are: “The Collector’s Vision: The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection”; “Water is Wyoming’s Gold: Better Living through Reclamation,” which is presented by the UW American Heritage Center; and four small exhibitions in the Pat Guthrie Special Exhibitions Teaching Gallery.

The popular 40th annual Juried University of Wyoming Student Exhibition also will open the same evening. This exhibition is open to any UW student enrolled during the current academic year. For the first time, this year’s exhibition also is open to any in-state student enrolled through the UW Outreach School program. A juror from outside the state is invited each year to select the exhibition.

This year’s juror is Kelly Baum, the Haskell Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Princeton University Art Museum. In addition to selecting artwork for the exhibition, Baum made award selections and provided a juror’s statement.

An awards ceremony for the annual student exhibition will begin at 6:30 p.m. The exhibition also is an opportunity for representatives of UW departments and units to purchase student artwork and add original works to their buildings and offices.

Students who receive awards will present a gallery walk-through Monday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m. at the UW Art Museum. The event is free and open to the public.

For more information, call the UW Art Museum at (307) 766-6622, visit the website at http://www.uwyo.edu/artmuseum or follow the museum on Facebook and Instagram.

Through its “Museum as Classroom” approach, the UW Art Museum places art at the center of learning for all ages. The museum is located in the Centennial Complex at 2111 Willett Drive. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday hours are extended to 9 p.m. February through April and September through November. Admission is free.
