New Exhibition of Western Artwork to Open at UW Art Museum

March 30, 2015
Wild Ducks painting - Hans Kleiber artist
Hans Kleiber’s watercolor “Wild Ducks” is among the works that can be seen starting Monday, April 6, at the University of Wyoming Art Museum.

A new exhibition of artwork by three prominent Wyoming artists will open Monday, April 6, at the University of Wyoming Art Museum. The exhibition will be on view through Aug. 1.

“Western Visions: William Gollings, Conrad Schwiering, and Hans Kleiber” provides a selection of artworks in diverse mediums -- oil and watercolor paintings, drawings and prints -- from the Art Museum’s collections, depicting Wyoming’s unique place in the West.

American art from the West reinforces the region’s identity and meaning as a place, especially that of Wyoming. William “Bill” Gollings (1878-1932), Conrad Schwiering (1916-1986) and Hans Kleiber (1887-1967) depicted the Wyoming of the West, from epic myth to sentimental nostalgia. Each artist envisioned Wyoming through the splendor of the landscape, and the people and wildlife that inhabit it.

Working in Sheridan, Gollings captured the battle between cowboy and bronco, and tranquil scenes of American Indian life. Schwiering focused on the landscape outside his studio in Jackson, and depicted the magnificence and grandeur of the Teton Mountains. Kleiber used his time working for the U.S. Forest Service around Sheridan to illustrate the abundance of wildlife native to Wyoming.

Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Mondays from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Admission is free.
