Harry Schlegel’s organizational skills and strong desire to make the campus a better place are among the attributes that have earned him the University of Wyoming’s Staff Employee of the First Quarter award.

The award recognizes UW staff members for their efforts toward excellence in the workplace. Schlegel will be honored at a public reception Thursday, April 16, at 1 p.m. in the Service Building conference room. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Schlegel, who manages the UW Physical Plant’s Plumbing Shop, stepped to the forefront to maintain the campus during recent flooding and freezing issues, the latest example of his desire to enhance the university in whatever capacity the institution needs.

“He has spent countless hours working on the initial problems and to ultimately get them solved over the long term,” wrote one nominator. Another wrote, “He has a sincere desire to help maintain campus for all who work or visit here.”

Along the way, he has served as a mentor and leader to those who work with him.

“He is happy to help with improving new methods and helping people advance with their careers,” another nominator wrote. “Much of what he does affects the upkeep of the whole campus, literally.”

Schlegel started working at UW in 1989 as a plumber/pipefitter, led by Guy Scarpelli through January 2007, and then worked as a project manager under Scott Barry until assuming his current job in January 2014. He is grateful for the support of his wife, Theresa, John Schuckman, “the ladies in the front office and the guys in the plumbing shop,” whom he describes as “the best craftsmen I have ever had the privilege to work with.”

“The support and encouragement that I have received from all of them in my 25 years of service is priceless,” Schlegel says. “I have only one regret for working at the University of Wyoming -- that I did not start sooner.”

He praises the people with whom he works.

“They’re the ones that bring out the best in you. And, hopefully, you do the same for them,” Schlegel says.

Employee of the Quarter nominees can be any UW staff employee and must receive three nomination forms from three separate individuals. Nominations must be submitted to the Staff Senate office. The forms are on the Web at www.uwyo.edu/staffsenate/employee-of-the-quarter. The deadline to nominate someone for the second quarter award is Friday, June 12.
