UW Mens Rodeo Team Fifth at Casper

April 21, 2015

With hopes of finishing among the top two teams in the Central Rocky Mountain Region (CRMR) all but diminished, the University of Wyoming team’s rodeo team will try to qualify as many individuals as possible for this summer’s College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR).

With just one rodeo remaining on the regular season docket, the Cowboys still have three individuals in the running for college rodeo’s biggest stage at the Casper Events Center in June.

Only the top two teams in the region automatically send full six-man teams to the CNFR, but schools with contestants finishing among the top three in individual events can qualify. Last year, the Pokes did that, sending four club members to the year-end competition.

With only UW’s annual Laramie River Rendezvous Rodeo left remaining May 1-3, the Cowboys are in position to qualify three individuals, including front-running Brady Dinwoodie, who leads all saddle bronc riders in the overall individual regional point standings by a wide margin. The Canadian transfer has garnered 1,045 points through eight fall and spring rodeos, while Casper College’s Justin Harrell is a distant second with 430 points.

Even though he has yet to place this spring, header Brit Ellerman, a senior from Fort Lupton, Colo., is in second place in team roping with partner Trey Yates of Eastern Wyoming College (EWC). They trail the leaders, Brady Wakefield of Gillette College and EWC’s Levi O’Keefe, by just 35 points.

A UW bulldogger is ranked among the top three steer wrestlers. Hunter Christensen from Alta is third with 470 points, just 25 points behind runner-up Jake Fulton of Casper College. Laramie County Community College’s (LCCC) Kalane Anders leads the pack with 725 points.

As a team, the Cowboys remained fourth overall in the CRMR standings this week with 2,895 points to trail the leaders Casper College and Gillette College for the top two positions. The T-Birds are the overall leaders with 3,505 points, while the Pronghorns have 3,445 points. Chadron State College (CSC) holds down third place with 3,280 points.

At last week’s Ropin’ and Riggin’ Days, hosted by Casper College, the Pokes scored 230 points to place fifth. Gillette College took the team title with 545 points, while the host T-Birds were the runner-up team with 400.

Dinwoodie won both rounds of saddle bronc riding to take the average. In fact, he was the only competitor to mark in both rounds. He had an opening-round best mark of 74 points, and had the only successful score in the short go with a 61-point ride.

Jaden Clark of Wellfleet, Neb., scored the Pokes’ final 85 points by splitting second place in the bareback riding competition. The sophomore was one of just three riders to put together back-to-back successful marks.

Amelia Anderson scored all the Cowgirls’ points in the women’s competition at the Casper College rodeo. The Forsyth, Mont., sophomore was third in the breakaway roping average to lead the UW women to an eighth-place finish.

She is the highest placer for the UW women’s team in individual events, sitting ninth in goat tying.

LCCC won the women’s title with 220 points in a low-scoring rodeo, while CSC was second at 205.

Gillette College remains the overall leader in the women’s team standings with 3,127.5 points and Northeastern Junior College is second with 1,695.
