Lindsay White, a physiology and Spanish major, and also an Honors Program student from Douglas, was among five finalists for the Rosemarie Martha Spitaleri Award as the University of Wyoming's outstanding graduating woman.

Callie Berman, of Boulder, Colo., was this year’s Rosemarie Martha Spitaleri Award recipient, and Josh Messer, of Cheyenne, received the Tobin Award, honoring the outstanding graduating man.

The Spitaleri award, established in 1964, recognizes students for exhibiting the finest leadership, academic integrity and citizenship qualities. Other finalists were McKensie Harris, Laramie; Molly Markow, Loveland, Colo.; and Hannah Young, Cheyenne. Students were honored at a recent luncheon.

To be considered for the Spitaleri and Tobin awards, students were judged on academic excellence and achievement; contributions and service to UW; participation and leadership in co-curricular activities; and demonstrated character and citizenship.

“As a senior, I can honestly say that the leadership opportunities provided to me at the University of Wyoming have allowed me to live with purpose every day. My constant push to reform the university community’s view of sorority women revolutionized my personal view of leadership,” White says. “My leadership role within the sorority community also gave me the opportunity to serve the University of Wyoming community. Throughout my undergraduate years, I have dedicated myself to scholarship, service and leadership.”

Nominators wrote letters of support for each of the students.

“Immediately, I was impressed with her academic excellence, motivation and leadership as she successfully navigated her coursework,” one nominator wrote. “With very little guidance, she began establishing a solid track record of independent achievement with successfully performing tissue culture and western blot analysis for various proteins of interest to our group. She has all the hallmarks of an intelligent, productive and thoughtful scientist.”

Another added, “She distinguishes herself as the student who is most filled with passion, enthusiasm and excitement about the course material. She has to be one of the most responsible and hardworking young women that I have seen at this institution. Ms. White’s strengths far outnumber her weaknesses; she has the drive and motivation of an intelligent, inquisitive young woman who yearns to gain in-depth knowledge.”
