Multicultural Graduation May 15 at UW

May 6, 2015

Approximately 70 students will participate in the University of Wyoming multicultural graduation ceremony Friday, May 15, at 3 p.m. in the Wyoming Union Ballroom.

Alyson Hagy, interim associate vice president for academic affairs and Department of English professor, is the scheduled speaker, along with UW student Jose Rivas, a criminal justice and Latino/a studies senior from Gillette.

During the ceremony, the UW International Students and Scholars office will give each graduate a stole that represents the flag of his or her home country. The Multicultural Affairs office will present graduates with kente-style woven stoles that include colors and symbols reflecting the graduates’ ethnicity or culture.

“Multicultural graduation recognizes the perseverance and dedication our many multicultural and international students have demonstrated throughout their UW educations,” says Jill Johnson, associate director of admissions. “We take this time to celebrate them as they graduate from the University of Wyoming.”

Brian Romero, UW Multicultural Affairs project coordinator, says the celebration can be viewed via a Bitly link at or a WyoCast link at, allowing many of the students’ families from distant countries to participate.

A complete schedule of other UW commencement ceremonies, set for May 14-16, can be found at
