UW Students Receive Northern Arapaho Endowment Scholarships

May 20, 2015

Seven University of Wyoming students are the recipients of Northern Arapaho Endowment Scholarships for the summer session and the 2015-16 academic year.

Current recipients of the endowment scholarship who will continue to receive support for the coming year are Contessa Bonds, a senior in kinesiology and health promotion, of Riverton; Colleen Friday, a senior in rangeland ecology and watershed management, from Laramie; Sandra Iron Cloud, seeking an M.S. degree in education with a concentration in curriculum instruction degree, from Ethete; and Fort Washakie’s Aldora White, seeking a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction.

New recipients are: Laramie’s Avis Garcia, seeking a Ph.D. in counselor education; Randi Red Wing, a junior in business administration, from Riverton; and Reinette Tendore, seeking a social work M.S. degree, from Mill Creek.

They were recognized at the recent American Indian Studies Honoring of Graduates ceremony.

The Northern Arapaho Endowment Scholarship Program was created in 1987 when the Northern Arapaho Tribe gave $500,000 to UW. The gift was matched by the state, creating a $1 million endowment that annually produces income for the scholarships. The endowment, with a current market value of $2.2 million, has provided more than $1.9 million to 94 individuals, 57 of whom have earned degrees and several others who are currently enrolled.

The Northern Arapaho Endowment at UW was established to help students from the Northern Arapaho Tribe gain formal knowledge, skills and abilities.

"The spirit of the award assumes that the recipients have, as part of their ultimate goals, some direct participation, appropriate to their educational background, in activities that will further the common good of the Arapaho people," says Debra Littlesun, UW Student Financial Aid associate director.
