The Canadian Operator Theory Symposium (COSy) recently presented its Israel Halperin Award to Zhuang Niu, an assistant professor in the University of Wyoming Department of Mathematics.

Presented only once every five years beginning in 1980, the award recognizes outstanding work in operator theory or operator algebras by a member of the Canadian mathematical community who has obtained a doctorate within the last 10 years. Niu received the award at the COSy’s recent annual meeting at the University of Waterloo.

Directed by Professor George Elliot, a leading operator algebraist, Niu received his doctorate from the University of Toronto. He previously held a three-year postdoctoral position at the University of Oregon, and later served as an assistant professor of mathematics at the Memorial University of Newfoundland. He joined the UW faculty in 2012.

Niu's research interests are in operator algebras, K-theory and dynamical systems, which are linked through the study of noncommutative topological spaces. He has published more than 10 articles in this research area.
