New Mexico State University has named Nicole Lamartine as a College of Arts and Sciences distinguished alumna.
Now an associate professor in the University of Wyoming Department of Music, Lamartine is a 1997 NMSU graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music with a focus on vocal performance.
The award is bestowed through a competitive nomination and selection process based on personal accomplishment, outstanding achievement and service. The award will be presented during homecoming festivities Friday, Oct. 23, in Las Cruces, N.M. Additionally, Lamartine will be honored on the football field at halftime during the 2015 NMSU homecoming game.
Currently director of choral activities at UW, Lamartine is a noted singer herself, having been a backup singer for Barry Manilow and Linda Ronstadt, as well as performing with Conspirare, a Grammy-nominated professional vocal group.
“I love what the students teach me,” she says. “Helping them discover music helps me rediscover it. I love watching the amazement in their eyes and the sense of shared creativity and purpose in a choir. The camaraderie is very powerful.”
Led by Lamartine, UW’s singers have performed throughout Wyoming at a variety of venues -- from state-of-the-art fine arts centers to high school gymnasiums in some of the state’s smallest towns.
“The smaller communities do a great job of coming out to support traveling artists,” Lamartine says. “Considering UW’s size, it is incredible that we have six different choral ensembles. We literally have a choir for everyone.”
