Jennifer Chavez, director of Information Technology Application and Database Services at the University of Wyoming, was a finalist for the Wyoming Women of Influence designation sponsored by the Wyoming Business Report.

Nominated in the education category, Chavez and other nominees were honored at a recent breakfast ceremony in Cheyenne. The Wyoming Business Report publisher and staff members selected the final honorees.

Her nomination notes that she oversees one of UW’s most complex units with her leadership in database administration; application security and quality assurance; all technology administrative systems; the student information system; and project support services. Chavez oversees a department of 39 full-time employees and a budget of approximately $600,000. Additionally, she is integrally involved with multimillion-dollar software application purchases and highly complex implementations.

Chavez plays a key role in UW’s major software implementations, including the Customer Relations Management tool; Academic Works for student scholarship automations; Degree Works to enhance degree audit tracking; and Early Alert, to provide a system for faculty and staff to intervene and provide academic and service support to students who are having academic challenges.

“She also has helped spearhead the learning management system replacement and, through her inclusive development process, the functionality of the end result, and the look and design are user friendly and intuitive,” the nomination stated.

“When this talented professional is leading an initiative, we can always count on the effort being on time, on budget and delivered with a great attitude and can-do spirit,” according to Sara Axelson, vice president for student affairs, and Robert Aylward, vice president of information technology. “She is extremely effective at mobilizing resources to address needs; is responsive, practical, creative, innovative and has a great sense of humor.”

A native of Cheyenne, Chavez received a B.S. degree in marketing from UW in 1998. She completed training in the UW Leadership Academy and has served on the UniWyo Federal Credit Union Board of Directors.

Tonja Woods, associate dean of the UW School of Pharmacy, was nominated as a finalist in the health care category.
