The second annual Bike to UW Day will take place Tuesday, Sept. 22, from 11 a.m.-noon at the University of Wyoming Simpson Plaza. The free event encourages individuals to commute to campus by bicycle.
Several organizations will be on hand to support riders with giveaways, free bike safety checks, bike registrations and information from bike-related organizations.
Dan McCoy, assistant director of Campus Recreation and chair of the UW Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Committee, says the event promotes and encourages bicycle commuting as a safe, fun and inexpensive alternative to driving.
The committee also wants to promote a few initiatives that support cycling on campus, such as registering bikes with the UW Police Department (UWPD), and a website that serves as a one-stop shop for bike-related resources for campus: www.uwyo.edu/tps/bike-commuting/.
Additionally, the committee will distribute updated bike maps for campus and surrounding areas to help commuters navigate to work or school.
Those who show up on bicycles at Simpson Plaza will receive:
-- Free bike safety checks performed by local bicycle shops.
-- Free bike lights to those who register their bikes (while supplies last), provided by UWPD.
-- Free bike maps.
-- Information provided by local bike organizations and more.
Bike to UW Day is sponsored by the UW Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Committee, Auxiliary Services, UWPD and the Outdoor Program.
