A free public lecture reconsidering what Afrofuturism means will take place Thursday, Oct. 22, at 4:10 p.m. in Room 129 of the University of Wyoming Classroom Building.

Hazel Carby’s lecture, titled “Black Futurities: Shape Shifting Beyond the Limits of the Human,” will examine the speculative fiction of Octavia Butler, the music of Drexcyia, and the art of Ellen Gallagher and Kara Walker.

Carby is a professor of African-American studies and American studies, and directs the Initiative on Race, Gender and Globalization at Yale University. She received her B.A. from Portsmouth Polytechnic, and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the Birmingham University Center for Contemporary Cultural Studies.

In 2014, she received the Modern Language Association’s Jay B. Hubbell Medal for Lifetime Achievement in American Literary Studies award.

At Yale, she teaches courses on issues of race, gender and sexuality through the culture and literature of the Caribbean; transnational and postcolonial literature and theory; representations of the black female body; and science fiction.

The event is sponsored by Phi Beta Kappa, the College of Arts and Sciences, Department of English, Wyoming Institute for Humanities Research, African American and Diaspora Studies and the American Studies Program. A reception will follow the lecture.
