Five University of Wyoming seniors rank among the nation’s leading Army ROTC cadets.

The Distinguished Military Graduate (DMG) award is given to cadets who rank in the top 20 percent of about 6,000 Army ROTC cadets nationwide. These cadets demonstrate dedication to the community and the ROTC program, and also excel in academics, leadership and physical fitness.

“It is an honor to be acknowledged for all the hard work I have put in for the last four years in the ROTC program,” says DMG award recipient Andrew Carollo, a political science major from Kemmerer.

The other four recipients are Dean Jackson, a business administration major from Cheyenne; Peter Kelchner, a criminal justice major from Albuquerque, N.M.; Jade Schmitt, a criminal justice major from Green River; and Jacob Woicik, a civil engineering major from Centennial, Colo.

“Having one-fourth of the Cowboy Battalion’s commissioning seniors receive such an outstanding award for the second year in a row is an achievement to be proud of,” says UW Professor of Military Science Lt. Col. Mitch Day.

“This is a team effort, and I know every one of them will tell you that they could not have done it without the help of their peers and those that they serve with,” says Day, who recently was recognized as the nation’s top professor of military science.

Day says the team mentality and dedication to the program displayed by these cadets and their peers have aided the Cowboy Battalion in ranking in the top 10 Army ROTC programs in the United States.
