Writer and adventurist Mark Jenkins will be the keynote speaker at the University of Wyoming College of Arts and Sciences’ annual Keith and Thyra Thomson Honors Convocation Friday, Oct. 16, at 4 p.m. in the Arts and Sciences auditorium.

The student speaker is Luke Anderson, from Cheyenne. He is a senior majoring in American studies, and environment and natural resources.

Each year, the College of Arts and Sciences honors students who have made the President’s, Dean’s or Freshman honor rolls during the past academic year.

Jenkins is a College of Arts and Sciences alumnus who earned his bachelor of science in philosophy and master of science degree in geography. He is a critically acclaimed author of four books, an internationally recognized journalist, contributing writer for National Geographic and a writer-in-residence at UW.

Jenkins has written about landmines in Cambodia, gorillas in Eastern Congo, the loss of koalas in Australia, global warming in Greenland, ethnic cleansing in Burma and climbing Mount Everest in Nepal. His speech is titled “A Geographer’s Life: Stories from a National Geographic Writer.”

This past summer, Anderson completed an internship with the Alliance for Historic Wyoming, the only nonprofit organization in the state dedicated to historic preservation of important community spaces and places. He will discuss “A Historic Preservation Approach to Sustaining Community.”

The convocation is open to the public free of charge. For information about the Honors Convocation, visit www.uwyo.edu/as/honors-convocation.
