UW Collegiate Chorale Presents ‘Human Spirit’ Oct. 21

October 16, 2015

The University of Wyoming Collegiate Chorale will perform pieces that reflect the essence of humanity in its fall concert Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall.

Tickets cost $10 for the public, $7 for senior citizens and $6 for students. Tickets are available from the Performing Arts box office by calling (307) 766-6666 or visiting www.uwyo.edu/finearts and at the door.

“The Human Spirit” is a world premiere by renowned conductor-composer Gerard Schwarz, formerly of the Seattle Symphony. He asked that the UW Collegiate Chorale premiere the choral work when he was on campus as Eminent Artist in 2014, says Nicole Lamartine, UW Department of Music associate professor and the chorale’s director.

“The work reflects on a quotation from composer Aaron Copland that music sustains the human spirit and gives it expressive meaning,” she says.

Violinist Josiah Baker will join the Collegiate Chorale in “The Nightingale,” a variant of the English folk song “The Bold Grenadier.” Other pieces on the program include a Scottish folk song, 18th century motet, a Kyrie that creates an ethereal soundscape and “O Magnum Mysterium.”

Closing the program is Jake Runestad’s “Nyon,” a lively exploration of the sounds that one can produce with the human voice.

The UW Collegiate Chorale is the university’s premiere choral ensemble, composed of 28 talented singers on campus. They have sung at national and regional conferences of the National Collegiate Choral Organization and the National Association for Music Educators.
