University of Wyoming at Casper faculty member Bruce Richardson, senior lecturer in the Department of English, will give the 2015 Buchanan Lecture Thursday, Nov. 12, at 3 p.m. in the UW College of Agriculture auditorium.

Richardson will discuss “But one part wisdom: Thoughts on teaching, research, service and the three-point shot.”

The lecture was established to honor Tom Buchanan, who retired in June 2013 after serving as UW’s 23rd president since 2005. The lecture is delivered annually by one of UW’s most accomplished retiring faculty members.

The lecture offers members of the university community the opportunity to hear distinguished UW faculty distill a life of inquiry, reflection and service into important guidance for successive generations.

During his 31-year career, Richardson taught a wide range of classes, many with an interdisciplinary focus, mostly at UW-Casper. Subjects included Shakespeare, Chaucer, contemporary Wyoming writers, horror literature, technical writing, and the arts and literature of 18th century England. Over the years, he served in a number of capacities at UW-Casper, including as associate dean and interim director.

An arts advocate and teacher, Richardson has held many leadership posts for arts organizations in Wyoming and nationally, and has published more than 80 essays and given 200 talks on arts and arts policy. For these efforts and others, he received the Governor’s Arts Award in 2014. He received UW’s highest teaching honor, the Ellbogen Lifetime Teaching Award, earlier this year.

The Office of Academic Affairs sponsors the event, selects the speaker and provides a monetary award. For more information, call the Office of Academic Affairs at (307) 766-4286.
