The Soweto Gospel Choir will perform at the University of Wyoming Sunday, Dec. 6, at 3 p.m. in the College of Arts and Sciences auditorium, the final performance of the Cultural Programs fall series.

Tickets cost $25.50 for the public; $20.50 for senior citizens, faculty and staff; and $10.50 for students. Tickets are available at the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts box office and the Wyoming Union information desk, by calling (307) 766-6666 or going online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts.

Formed in 2002, Soweto Gospel Choir celebrates the inspirational power of African gospel music. Directed by Beverly Bryer, the choir draws upon the best talent from the nation’s many churches.

The more than 30-member ensemble blends elements of African gospel, Negro spirituals, reggae and American popular music. The group performed at the first of the 46664 AIDS charity concerts for Nelson Mandela and has since toured internationally several times.

In 2009, the choir became the first South African artist to perform at the Academy Awards, singing “Down to Earth” with John Legend. The song, featured in the Pixar animated film “Wall-E,” won a Grammy in the Best Movie Song category.

The Soweto Gospel Choir has performed at many international festivals and events. It has performed with celebrities such as Celine Dion and Josh Groban, and in prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House, the Nelson Mandela Theatre and the Royal Festival Hall in London.

The group also appeared on NBC’s “Today" show, “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and the “Tonight Show” with Jay Leno.
