Latinos in Wyoming Exhibition Opens in UW Gallery 234

“Latinos in Wyoming -- Cultural Journeys and Devotions” will be on display through Thursday, Feb. 11, in Gallery 234, located in the lower level of the University of Wyoming Union.

In conjunction with UW’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Days of Dialogue, a reception will be held Thursday, Feb. 4, from 5-7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public in Gallery 234.

The exhibition is a project conducted by the UW Latina/o Studies Program. The project was researched by Vanessa Fonseca, a UW assistant professor of Latina/o studies and English. Two of her students, Bevan Beck, a nursing raduate student from Gillette, and Robert Perea, an English graduate student from Cheyenne, were involved in the classroom aspect of the project and spearheaded the exhibition. Both are minoring in Latina/o studies. Cecelia Aragon, chair of the Latina/o Studies Program, supported the project.

“Latinos in Wyoming” is a biography-based project incorporating the medium of photography to vividly and accurately explore the Chicano/Latino demographic in the state.

“This project is the first of its kind for the Latina/o Studies Program at UW and satisfies research in cultural humanities exploration,” Fonseca says. “This project will help to create an in-depth, comprehensive catalog of Latinos residing in Wyoming, allowing them to be active voices to promote dialogue on the importance of community, spirituality and political involvement.”

Many of Fonseca’s students in her “Chicano Folklore” class photographed and recorded video for the project.
