A client of the University of Wyoming’s Wyoming Technology Business Center in Casper has been named the International Business Innovation Association’s (InBIA) 2016 Outstanding Hard Science Incubator Client of the Year.

McGinley Orthopedics was the first client of the Wyoming Technology Business Center (WTBC) Casper Area Incubator. The WTBC is a UW business development program that focuses on developing early-stage, technology-based companies with an emphasis on high-growth firms. The program helps client companies grow larger and faster than they would otherwise, and increases the ability of the entrepreneurs to manage and grow their business. In addition to the Laramie site, business incubators are located in Casper and Sheridan.

“Dr. Joe and his team have done a great job. They have taken a concept and brought it to market; and they did it in the medical device field, which requires extensive FDA approval,” says Joseph Bennick, director of the Casper Area Incubator. “The WTBC is honored to have McGinley Orthopedics as a client, and the company’s reputation has influenced the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Casper. It’s encouraging to have people call the WTBC and ask about the incubator program because they read about McGinley Orthopedics in the news.

“In fact, one of the five finalists in the WTBC Casper Start-Up Challenge was inspired by McGinley Orthopedics’ accomplishments,” Bennick adds. “It’s exciting to witness new clients starting businesses because of existing clients.”

“It’s a great honor for our company to receive this award,” says Joseph McGinley, founder and CEO of McGinley Orthopedics. “We have worked with the WTBC, really from the start . This shows what types of possible outcomes you can have with collaborations between a university and private business.”

McGinley Orthopedics has 11 employees at its incubator headquarters, where it started in June 2013. This includes a full engineering staff and an additional 21 employees at McGinley Manufacturing in Glenrock. The company’s flagship product, IntelliSense Drill Technology, is an orthopedic drill that features an auto-stop on the far side of the bone; automatic depth measurement to tell surgeons accurate screw size; and In-Sight Surgical Lighting, which eliminates the surgical field. The product is on the market, and its technology benefits patients across the country.

InBIA is the world’s leading organization advancing business incubation and entrepreneurship. InBIA helps communities enable entrepreneurs to transform their dreams into innovative businesses that make global prosperity a reality. InBIA judges look for companies that have developed particularly effective innovations and have accomplished their missions.
