UW Choirs to Perform Year-End Concert April 22

April 19, 2016

A “Choral Collage,” featuring the University of Wyoming’s Singing Statesmen, Happy Jacks and Bel Canto ensembles, will include a variety of music Friday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall. The event is free and open to the public.

The UW Department of Music sponsors the annual year-end event.

Bel Canto Women’s Choir, conducted by Assistant Professor Holly Dalrymple, will sing a set of Middle Eastern pieces: “Iraqi Piece Song” in Arabic with cello and dumbek, and a set of Persian pieces set to the poetry of Hafez. Safa Eslambolchi will sing the poetry in a Persian style before each piece.

The women’s choir also will honor this semester’s graduating music students with their traditional singing of the Irish blessing, "Deep Peace of the Running Wave to You.”

“This semester, Bel Canto has expanded to include a small, unnamed auditioned ensemble,” Dalrymple says. “This 16-woman group focuses on music conceived for fewer voices.”

They will sing two pieces of different contrasts: Francesca Caccini’s “Aure volante,” from a 16th century opera, and a barbershop tune, “Java Jive.”

George Schrader, UW associate director of bands, says the Singing Statesmen will perform Randall Thompson's "The Testament of Freedom."

“This is a four-movement piece based on the writings of Thomas Jefferson, and was composed in honor of the 200th anniversary of his birth,” Schrader says. “It was first performed April 13, 1943, at Cabell Hall at the University of Virginia.”

The UW Symphonic Band will accompany the Singing Statesmen to perform this work, with about 100 musicians on stage.

The a cappella group, The Happy Jacks, will perform a variety of popular music. This auditioned ensemble is made up of members of the Singing Statesmen, and tour regularly throughout Wyoming and surrounding states

The group will offer its own concert Friday, April 29, at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center concert hall. The performance is free and open to the public.
