Brian Schueler, of Buffalo, was among seven finalists for the 2016 Tobin Memorial Award as the University of Wyoming’s outstanding graduating man.

As this year’s Associated Students of UW (ASUW) president, Schueler will graduate with degrees in international studies and economics. The annual Tobin Award recognizes academic excellence and achievement, service to the university, participation and leadership in the community and campus activities, and citizenship qualities.

Vikram Singh, from Bangalore, India, received the Tobin Award, while Kimberly Sanchez, of Cheyenne, was named the Rosemarie Martha Spitaleri Award recipient as the outstanding graduating woman during a recent ceremony honoring all the nominees.

Schueler says being elected ASUW president has afforded him the opportunity to help others at UW.

“I’ve had so many great opportunities to represent UW and make important advances for my fellow students at UW,” he says. “The year I spent in China was the most memorable and important time of my life; it was a transformative experience.”

One of his instructors praises Schueler for his outstanding academic qualities.

“Brian is one of those rare and special students who remind faculty members why our teaching profession is so meaningful,” the instructor says. “Brian demonstrates what all faculty members hope for in their students: self-motivation and self-exploration. Brian is conscientious, loyal, dedicated, mature, articulate, hard-working, happy, even-keeled, balanced, talented, organized, eager, intelligent and professional.”

A nominator writes, “He sets high expectations for himself, which is evident from the nearly perfect performance he has given to each of the classes he has taken. In addition to his polite, professional and cordial nature, Brian is an excellent public speaker and leader.”
