The University of Wyoming Art Museum will offer “Paint Pony Express: Storymakers,” a series of free art classes for children ages 3-11 during two weeks in July.

Each day of the week is designed for a specific age group. Classes for students ages 3-5 will be Tuesdays, July 5 and 12. Students ages 6-8 will meet Wednesdays, July 6 and 13. Classes for students ages 9-11 will be Thursdays, July 7 and 14. Classes meet from 1-3 p.m. each day.

Guided by museum teachers and visiting artists, students will use art and storytelling to explore a different exhibition and theme each week. The first week, participants will discover “Oversized: Contemporary Art from the Museum Collection.” Participants will find inspiration from the “Aimé Mpane” exhibition during the second week.

“Paint Pony Express: Storymakers” uses the “Museum as Classroom” approach, including discussions based on current art exhibitions, creating art, and reading and writing activities. The program gives children an opportunity to have fun while they learn about the world and themselves through art.

All age groups will have the opportunity to make art using paint, printmaking, sculpture and more. Children should wear appropriate clothing. Parents or caregivers must stay with children under 5 years old.

Classes are free, but preregistration is encouraged. For more information and to register, contact Master Teacher Heather Bender at (307) 766-3515 or hbender1@uwyo.edu.

“Museum as Classroom” is a guiding principle of the UW Art Museum’s programs. Located in the Centennial Complex at 2111 Willett Drive in Laramie, the museum is open Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday hours are extended to 7 p.m. February through April and September through November. Admission is free.
