Campus Construction Update for Oct. 23

These are among the construction activities scheduled Oct. 23-29 at the University of Wyoming:

Water Outage (UW Operations) -- UW Operations will change the fire hydrant on the south side of McWhinnie Hall Friday, Oct. 21. Water will have to be shut off to McWhinnie Hall, the Education Building and Half Acre Recreation and Wellness Center from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Signs will be posted in these buildings. Please use adjacent buildings for restroom use: Wyo Hall, Education Annex, Agriculture and the Wyoming Union. The sidewalk going into Prexy’s Pasture will be blocked by repairs. Please use alternate routes. Use caution in this area.

Sprinkler Winterization (UW Operations, Plumbing Shop) -- The plumbing shop has started to blow out the sprinkler lines for the winter. Crews currently are on the west side of campus and will continue to move throughout campus until all the lines are completed. Please use caution if you see water on the sidewalk or concrete areas, especially in the early morning hours, as they may be slippery due to the colder temperatures at that time. Also, use caution around these crews as they perform this work.

Colder Weather (UW Operations) -- As we approach the colder weather months, UW Operations asks building occupants to assist with ensuring buildings and facilities are safe and secure. Make sure all windows and doors are completely closed with windows latched at the end of each day, and report any doors or windows that you are unable to close and secure to the Service Desk (766-6225).

Ross Hall/North Side Fire Hydrant Leak (UW Operations) -- Old Main, Merica Hall, Student Health/Cheney International Center, Hoyt Hall, Ross Hall and Knight Hall -- repairs are complete, with the placement of the fire hydrant Oct. 20. Some cleanup of the project remains. Please use caution when in this area. Thank you to all for the cooperation with the water outage.

UW Operations reports the following activities for the week:

Education Building (Arcon Inc., Laramie; November 2016) -- Construction is ongoing for the Education Building window replacement project. Scaffolding will remain on the south side of the building to enable ongoing awning repairs. Window replacement on the south side of the third floor is complete. Window replacement will continue in the dean’s office for the next week. Replacement of these windows is expected to improve energy efficiency and occupant comfort. Please be cautious of crews and equipment in the area.

Agriculture Building (Mastec, Denver, Colo.; November 2016) -- Installation of an AT&T Cellular site on the east roof of the building is nearing completion. Equipment from McIntire Hall will be moved to Agriculture mid-week. The man lift has been removed and the east entry of the building is open. Please be cautious of work crews and equipment in the area.

Gibbon Street East of 15th Street (Equipment Services) -- Installation of the culvert at the RMMC storage building is complete. Maintenance activities on the gravel portion of Gibbon Street east of 15th Street will be ongoing. Please use caution around crews and equipment in the area.

Agriculture Building (Summit Sealants Inc., Montrose, Colo.; November 2016) -- Building exterior surface repairs are complete for the season. The company will return in spring 2017 to finish both buildings.

Arts and Sciences Building (Arcon Inc., Laramie; November 2016) -- Construction on the upper balcony railing now will begin. Please be aware of crews and equipment in the area, and observe posted closures.

McWhinnie Hall (UW Operations Paint Shop) -- Painting of interior public spaces is underway. Painters will focus on the corridors and stairwells of the upper level and work their way down. The third floor and second floors are complete, and work is progressing on the first floor. Painting is expected to continue for two more weeks. Please be cautious of crews and equipment in the area.

High Bay Research Facility (Haselden Wyoming Constructors, Laramie; scheduled completion Jan. 4, 2017) -- Final grading and topsoil placement is nearing completion, with current focus on the southeast corner of the building. Painting and striping of the west parking lot will be complete next week. Cap flashings for the masonry walls surrounding the mechanical yard are nearing completion. Flashing and expansion joints will be placed on the north façade of the building next week. Suspended ceilings are being constructed within the laboratories on the first floor of the west wing. Card reader and security camera installation has begun. The first coat of epoxy flooring is being installed on the first floor of the west wing. Built-in casework and seating are being installed in the lobby and lounge. Installation of perforated metal panels to enclose the staircases will begin next week. Steam service has been turned on in the building and major systems are being activated. Light fixtures are being placed throughout the first floor. Doors and hardware are being installed on the first floor of the west wing. Finish caps for the exterior sunshades will begin installation next week. The bifold garage doors are installed on the High Bay portion of the building and the finish panels are being installed. The final coat of paint on the second floor will begin next week. Final connections are being made to the back-up generators and paralleling gear.

Engineering Education and Research Building (EERB) Site Clearing/Demolition (General contractor Wyoming Earthmoving Corp., Rozet; October 2016) -- All work is now complete, and the general contractor has demobilized off the site. The contract with the general contractor currently is being closed out.

Engineering Education and Research Building (EERB) (Construction manager GE Johnson Construction Wyoming, Casper; spring 2019) -- The site fence is installed around the site. Earth-moving operations are underway and will continue for the next two weeks. Deep foundations will commence on or near the first week of November. No parking signs will be going up on the east side of 12th Street for the duration of the project.

Wyoming State Vet Lab Renovations (BSL-3) (General contractor Sampson Construction, Cheyenne; June 2017) -- All temporary protection measures are in place. Demolition within the BSL-3 space is ongoing, with plumbing, electrical and ductwork layouts continuing. Excavation for the emergency exit vestibule addition and EDS manhole relocation, both on the southeast side of the building, is complete. Manhole placement and addition concrete footings are complete. Additional concrete slab and stairs will be completed this week. A fence will be placed around the excavated areas. Masonry wall installation will be complete in the cage wash area this week. New EDS vent line installation in the existing incinerator room is ongoing. There is a full building steam shutdown scheduled Oct. 22 for new tie-ins. Contractor access to the building will be on the east side. Be cautious around heavy equipment.

Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts (General contractor Sampson Construction, Cheyenne; September 2016) -- The project includes the installation of a sanitary lift station for the building. The parking lot will be open for use again. When the new pump arrives, the new hole for the lift station will be dug on the south side of the building. Use caution around equipment and work activities.

Arena-Auditorium Addition and Renovations (General contractor Sletten Construction of Wyoming Inc., Cody; October 2017) -- The project includes an addition to the east side of the building, which will provide a new major façade to the facility. The concourse will be renovated to provide improved concession areas, merchandise areas, restrooms, way finding and an upgraded appearance. A new central ticket office will be created to serve the A-A as well as War Memorial Stadium. A concession commissary will be developed within the southeast portion of the addition to serve the A-A, War Memorial Stadium and other athletics events. A limited-use elevator will be installed to provide access for patrons seated on or near the arena floor. A new smoke evacuation system also will be installed within the facility. Parking on the east side of the building will be blocked for the project duration. Access to the A-A will remain open during the project, but be cautious of equipment, vehicles and construction crews in the area. Excavation and demolition continue on the exterior of the building. Pilasters and ground beams are being formed this week on the east side. Underground work on the commissary addition will begin this week.

Veterans Memorial Relocation (GE Johnson, Casper; October 2016) -- This project is in anticipation of the start of construction of the High Altitude Performance Center in late November. It includes relocation of the existing Veterans Memorial on the north end of War Memorial Stadium. The obelisks and all associated stonework, plaques and infrastructure will be relocated to the west-southwest of the Indoor Practice Facility adjacent to Warburton Plaza. A fence perimeter has been established around the new memorial location. Site work, underground utilities and foundations are complete. The memorial spires have been relocated, and adjacent concrete flatwork has begun. Please be cautious around equipment and crews in the area.

Sigma Phi Epsilon (Carpenter and Paint Shops; September 2016) -- Mold abatement is complete in the basement storage area, and wall reconstruction will begin. Use caution around equipment and work crews’ activities.

Engineering Building Petroleum Wing -- Finish work and painting are scheduled for the southwest stairwell of the Petroleum (west) wing of the Engineering Building. The process will take several weeks. Finish work is 95 percent complete. Material and equipment will be stockpiled in the work area. Please use caution near crews and equipment in this area.

Pharmacy East Area (The Plumbing Company, Laramie & Equipment Services; October 2016) -- A drain basin has been installed to prevent water from ponding on the east end of Pharmacy. Traffic is restricted to one lane in this area while the concrete cures through Oct. 28. Please be cautious around equipment and work crews in the area.

Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts (Gem City Roofing, Laramie; November 2016) -- A stairwell inset roof on the southwest corner of the building will be replaced, time and weather permitting. A man lift will be utilized. Use caution around equipment and work activities.

General Storage Building (Southeast Wyoming Insulation, Laramie; October 2016) -- Wall insulation will be installed in the mover’s storage area, affecting no one but the movers. The project will be completed as quickly as possible.

Ross Hall (Colorado Hazard Control, Denver; October 2016) -- New flooring will be installed in Ross Hall Room 252 Monday, Oct. 24. There may be some noise with workers moving in and out of the building. Please be cautious around equipment and work crews in this area.

Coe Library (Laramie Mechanical and Heating Systems LLC, Laramie; October 2016) -- Contractor will be conducting a duct repair work in the penthouse of Coe Oct. 25-Oct. 27. The AHU might be shut down for a few hours of work duration. Please use caution near crews.

The following projects are complete:

Southeast Corner of Bradley and 13th Street (Equipment Services) -- Concrete work to replace a damaged sidewalk is complete.

Biological Sciences Building (Spiegelberg Lumber & Building, Laramie; November 2016) -- Caulking to alleviate leakage and window washing is complete.
