University of Wyoming Calendar for Oct. 10

These are among the activities scheduled Oct. 10-16 at the University of Wyoming:

Monday, Oct. 10, 3:10 p.m. -- The Department of Geology and Geophysics Distinguished Lecturer Series presents Leslie Rogers, assistant professor in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Chicago. Rogers’ talk, “NASA’s Kepler Mission Discovers Bigger, Older Cousin to Earth: The Diversity and Demographics of Distant Rocky Worlds,” will be in the S.H. Knight Geology Building, Room 216. Free.

Monday, Oct. 10, 6 p.m. -- The 2016 Bruce Richardson Lecture in the Humanities features Caroline Levine, the David and Kathleen Ryan Professor of the Humanities at Cornell University. Levine will present “Forms of Sociability: Novels, Numbers and Other Collectives” in Hoyt Hall, Room 125.

Monday, Oct. 10-Wednesday, Oct. 12, 7-9 p.m. -- “I Accept Myself: Real Women, Real Bodies 2016 Conference” will take place in the Wyoming Union ballrooms.

Monday, Oct. 10, 7:30 p.m. -- Guest artist Jim Stephenson will perform in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall. Free.

Tuesday, Oct. 11, 3:10-6 p.m. -- The School of Energy Resources will host an open house to highlight its centers of excellence on the second floor of the Energy Innovation Center. Light refreshments and music by UW Department of Music Emeritus Professor Rod Garnett will be provided. Free.

Tuesday, Oct. 11, 7 p.m. -- Planetarium show, “IBEX: The Search for the Edge of the Solar System.” Tickets cost $3 for students and $4 for non-students, Physical Sciences Building basement. Advance tickets are available in the Physical Sciences Building, Room 204.

Wednesday, Oct. 12, noon-1 p.m. -- The Fall 2016 Engineering Initiative Speaker Series presents Gang Tan, associate professor in the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering, and Kevin Kilty, associate lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Tan will discuss “Occupant Presence Modeling and Integrating with Building Simulation” and Kilty will speak on “Improvements to ME Thermal/Fluids Lab” in the Energy Innovation Center’s Encana Auditorium. Free.

Wednesday, Oct. 12, 5:30 p.m. -- The Earth, Wind and Water Series hosts David Lawrence, chairman and CEO of Lawrence Energy Group LLC, and Brad Neilson, Royal Dutch Shell’s former general counsel for global litigation. Their talk, “Choices and Challenges of the Energy Transition: Moving from Rhetoric and Conflict to Reality,” will be in the Berry Biodiversity Conservation Center auditorium. A panel discussion will follow. Free.

Thursday, Oct. 13, 6:30 p.m. -- Cowgirl volleyball vs. San Diego State, UniWyo Sports Complex. Ticket prices vary.

Thursday, Oct. 13, 7:30 p.m. -- The UW Symphony Orchestra presents “Opening Night” in the Performing Arts concert hall. Tickets cost $10 for the public, $7 for senior citizens and $6 for students. Friday, Oct. 14, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. -- “Landscape Discussion on Energy Law and Policy in the Rockies” will feature top national, regional and local experts who will focus on key energy issues in Wyoming, the Rocky Mountain region and the nation. Friday, Oct. 14, 4:10 p.m. -- The UW Department of Anthropology Fall 2016 Seminar Series presents Bruce Budowle, professor of molecular and medical genetics at the University of North Texas. His talk, “The Burgeoning Field of Microbial Forensics: Science Serving to Protect Our Nation,” will be in the College of Business auditorium. Free.

Friday, Oct. 14, 5 p.m. -- UW swimming and diving vs. New Mexico, Corbett Building.

Friday, Oct. 14, 6:30 p.m., 9 p.m., 11:30 p.m. -- The 7220 Entertainment Films Committee presents “Sausage Party” in the Wyoming Union Family Room. Free.

Friday, Oct. 14, 7:30 p.m. -- The Wyoming Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble II will perform “Basie and Beyond” in the Performing Arts concert hall. Saturday, Oct. 15, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. -- The UW Geological Museum and the Wyoming State Geological Survey will host “Earth Science Day” in the UW Geological Museum. Activities include a fossil prep-lab tour, interactive tables and activities, and a children’s scavenger hunt. Free.  

Saturday, Oct. 15, 1 p.m. -- Cowgirl volleyball vs. Nevada, UniWyo Sports Complex. Ticket prices vary.

Saturday, Oct. 15, 4-11:45 p.m. -- Diwali Night, the Indian Festival of lights, will take place in the College of Arts and Sciences auditorium.

Saturday, Oct. 15, 8 p.m. -- Wyoming Public Media presents “Reinventing Radio: An Evening with Ira Glass” in the Laramie High School auditorium. Tickets cost $55 and are available at www.uwyo.edu/finearts.
