UW-Sponsored World Languages Day Starts You Fund Campaign

October 28, 2016

Sponsors for World Languages Day 2017 are turning to the popular trend of crowdfunding to help support the program that attracts nearly 350 students from across the state each spring to the University of Wyoming.

The goal is to try to raise $6,000 to help eliminate the $15 registration fee for participants, says Laura De Lozier, UW Department of Modern and Classical Languages assistant chair. The department has sponsored the event the past five years.

World Languages Day, which is typically scheduled the first Friday and Saturday of March, celebrates second language -- or more -- acquisition and cultural awareness for students in grades 6-12. Last year, 360 participants were involved in 80 competitions and 24 workshops. Students also attended a resource fair.

The annual event provides a venue for students to showcase their language talents in judged competitions. This year’s event is March 4-5.

De Lozier says the funding campaign will help offset the conference’s biggest expense: the cost of meals for the more than 350 students and the staff members who lead the programs.

“These meals provide more than sustenance. They allow students in grades 6-12 to envision a place for themselves at UW, build community with other Wyoming language-learners and hear music from a range of cultures during the Saturday luncheon,” she says. “Our picking up the tab for these meals also stretches the tight budgets that our colleagues in Wyoming school districts have for extracurricular activities in the humanities.”
