Applications for qualified students are now being accepted for the University of Wyoming’s Air Force ROTC (AFROTC) accelerated commissioning program.

As commissioned officers in the Air Force, students will have high-paying, guaranteed jobs as second lieutenants after graduation.

“The Air Force is looking to increase its officer corps by several hundred by 2018, and certain technical career fields are in high demand,” says Capt. George Noah, AFROTC unit admissions officer at UW.

For most students, ROTC is a three- to four-year program, but candidates in the accelerated program can earn their commissions in as little as one year. Students will sign contracts for active-duty service almost immediately, and will receive monthly allowances of $350-$500 until graduation.

For most careers, a contract requires four years of active-duty service after graduation. Scholarship money may be available for highly qualified students.

Minimum qualification requirements are:

-- 2.5 cumulative GPA.

-- Current full-time student (graduate or undergraduate) in any major.

-- Scheduled graduation date of December 2017 or later.

-- Pass background check.

Upon enrolling in the program, requirements are:

-- Pass the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test.

-- Pass the Air Force Physical Fitness Assessment.

-- Attend AFROTC field training during the summer.

-- Be medically qualified.
