UW Kappa Kappa Gamma Hosts Chili con Kappa Nov. 19

The University of Wyoming Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority is hosting the annual Chili con Kappa chili feed from noon-5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at the Kappa house, located at 1604 E. Sorority Row. Admission is $5 or a donation of two children’s books.

Proceeds will benefit Kappa’s national philanthropic partner, Reading Is Fundamental, which wants to put a book in the hands of every child.

Lauren Mochowski, Kappa philanthropy chair, says Kappa women believe that early reading is the key to freeing up a child’s imagination, opening doors to a world of possibilities they might not otherwise envision.

“There’s something special about coming together to raise awareness for something bigger than ourselves,” Mochowski says. “All of the people who come to the chili feed can join us in giving back to the community in a great way.”

Kappa chapters all across the country will host special events to raise money for Reading Is Fundamental this fall. Two-thirds of the 16 million children living in poverty in America do not have books of their own, according to Reading Is Fundamental research.

Once donations are collected from the chili feed, the local Kappa chapter will partner with Kappa alumnae to distribute books at schools throughout the Albany County School District.

“It’s really rewarding to see the looks on the faces of young boys and girls when they realize the book in their hands is theirs to keep,” Mochowski says.

Kappa hosts other events throughout the year benefitting such groups as the Albany County SAFE Project and Relay for Life.
