UW Names Associate VP for Budgeting and Fiscal Planning

An experienced financial manager who has helped design the University of Wyoming’s new management systems will join the university as its associate vice president for budgeting and fiscal planning.

David Jewell will begin his duties Nov. 21, moving from Huron Consulting Group, where he has been a consultant since 2012. In that role, he has worked with UW over the past year to plan and begin implementing WyoCloud, UW’s new Oracle cloud-based systems for financial management, human capital management, grants management, budgeting and planning, supply chain management, and reporting and analytics.

“We are delighted to have David join the university to lead our budgeting and fiscal planning processes,” Vice President for Administration Bill Mai says. “We are revamping the way the university does business in many respects, and the manner in which we establish budgets and plan our fiscal future is a big part of that. David’s familiarity with the university was not the reason he was hired, but there’s no question it will help him hit the ground running.”

Jewell’s position is new to the university, created from three vacant positions in the Division of Administration that will not be filled.

Jewell received a bachelor’s degree in human and organizational development from Vanderbilt University in 2005, then a Master of Business Administration degree from Vanderbilt’s Owen Graduate School of Management in 2012.

His work experience includes multiple roles in Vanderbilt University’s Provost’s Office of Finance and Administration, and as interim director of finance and administration at the Vanderbilt Law School. As a consultant for Huron Consulting Group, he worked with over a dozen universities in the U.S. and Canada on resource allocation, planning and management, and financial reporting projects.

“I very much look forward to working collaboratively with President Nichols, the vice presidents, deans, faculty, staff and students to ensure UW’s approach to budgeting and planning, and the implementation of WyoCloud, align to support the university’s strategic plan and further support its core missions of discovery, teaching and service,” Jewell says.

He is married to Shelley Jewell, and they have two daughters, Madelynn, 4, and Frances, 2.
