UW Opens Search for Dean of Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources

The University of Wyoming has opened the search for a new dean of the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources.

The Haub School is an interdisciplinary unit that collaborates with faculty and partners across campus, throughout the state and beyond to advance environmental and natural resources education, inquiry, solutions and leadership.

The dean, who holds an endowed Wyoming Excellence Chair position, is the unit’s chief academic and administrative officer, and reports to the provost. The dean oversees six academic programs serving approximately 250 students and 17 core faculty and staff, as well as the school’s Ruckelshaus Institute. The institute conducts policy analyses, communicates relevant research and promotes collaborative decision making to support stakeholder-driven solutions to environmental and natural resources challenges throughout the state and region.

The dean works with administrators, faculty, staff and students throughout the UW campus, and with a broad network of statewide, regional, national and international partners to promote excellence in environmental and natural resources education, research and outreach.

The search is being conducted by a 15-member committee made up of UW staff, faculty, students and off-campus natural resource stakeholders. UW Provost Kate Miller chairs the committee. Review of applications will begin Jan. 6, with an anticipated start date of June 1. Nominations and expressions of interest will be confidential until public, on-campus interviews are conducted.

Doug Wachob, director of academic programs in the Haub School, currently serves as interim dean. He was named to the position after Indy Burke accepted the dean position at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. As a member of the search committee, Wachob will not be a candidate for the deanship, and he will return to his role as academic programs director once the dean position is filled.

Burke, who led the Haub School for eight years, advanced the Haub School’s mission; expanded enrollment and academic offerings; promoted outreach initiatives and collaborative solutions work; hired essential new faculty members; and fundraised.
