Body Image Awareness Week Begins Feb. 27 at UW

Events promoting positive and healthy body image will be offered during Body Image Awareness Week Monday, Feb. 27, through Friday, March 3, at the University of Wyoming.

Events scheduled are:

Monday, Feb. 27, noon-12:50 p.m. -- “Looking Through the Lens: How Media Portrays Body Type,” Real Women, Real Bodies photos show how the media portrays different body types, Wyoming Union Senate Chambers, Room 221. Food will be provided.

3-3:50 p.m. -- “Feeling Beautiful from the Inside Out,” presented by Kierston Mills, personal trainer and owner of FearfullymadeFIT LLC. Learn ways to challenge negative thinking, understand the importance of a tribe and apply tips to live a healthy lifestyle, Wyoming Union Senate Chambers, Room 221.

Tuesday, Feb. 28, 1-1:50 p.m. -- “Mindful Eating” seminar. Learn what, when and how to eat, Half Acre Recreation and Wellness Center, Room 117. Registration requested by emailing wellness@uwyo.edu.

Wednesday, March 1, 11-11:50 a.m. -- “Handle with Care: Shedding Light on Eating Disorders,” presented by Kylie Boardman, UW counselor education graduate student, Wyoming Union Family Room, Room 212.

Noon-12:50 p.m. -- “Binge Eating: What It Is, What It Isn’t and What to Do About It,” presented by doctoral student Kyle De Young and master’s degree student Alexandra Thiel, both in the UW Department of Psychology, Wyoming Union Family Room, Room 212. Food will be provided.

5-7 p.m. -- “The Body Project,” a peer-led discussion about women and “the perfect body,” Half Acre Recreation and Wellness Center, Room 117. A pair of two-hour sessions also will be offered Wednesday, March 1, and Wednesday, March 8.

Thursday, March 2, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. -- “Body Images-Interactive Art Showing,” Christie Sandvik demonstrates that either there is no “perfect” body, or that everyone is “perfectly imperfect,” Wyoming Union Family Room, Room 212.

1-3 p.m. -- UW Gatekeepers suicide prevention training, sponsored by University Counseling Center, Wyoming Union Flaming Gorge Room, Room 002.

Friday, March 3, 9-9:50 a.m. -- “College Student Perspective on Body Image and Clothing,” UW Department of Family and Consumer Sciences students present their initial research into a variety of topics, Wyoming Union Family Room, Room 212.

10-10:50 a.m. -- “Body Images,” artist Christie Sandvik uses body print paintings to demonstrate that either there is no “perfect” body, or that everyone is “perfectly imperfect,” Wyoming Union Family Room, Room 212.

11-11:50 a.m. -- “Intro to BodyLove,” Emily Brown discusses intuitive eating, psychology of eating, and mind body integration to help examine and shift thoughts and beliefs about diet and body, Wyoming Union Family Room, Room 212. Food provided.

Noon-1:30 p.m. -- “Yoga as an Embodied Practice for Empowerment and Healing,” a workshop and presentation led by Erica Barton and Emily Brown, Wyoming Union Family Room, Room 212.
