Traditional dancing will be offered when dance company Step Afrika! performs at the University of Wyoming Saturday, March 4, at 7 p.m. in the College of Arts and Sciences auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

For more than 21 years, Step Afrika! has been among the top 10 African-American dance companies in the United States. The company began as an exchange program with the Soweto Dance Theatre of Johannesburg, South Africa, and has expanded to become a national and international touring company presenting performances, residencies and workshops worldwide.

Step Afrika! will perform stepping, a dance based on a long and rich tradition in African-based communities that uses movement, words and sounds to communicate allegiance to a group. It draws movements from African foot dances, such as gumboot. The stepping tradition in the United States grew out of song and dance rituals practiced by historically African-American fraternities and sororities, beginning in the early 1900s.

7220 Entertainment, in collaboration with UW’s Black Student Alliance, Multicultural Affairs, and African American and Diaspora Studies, will host the event.

7220 Entertainment’s Fine Arts and Lectures Committee, which organized the performance, meets Mondays at 5 p.m. in the Campus Activities Center (CAC), located in Room 012 of the Wyoming Union.
