University of Wyoming Calendar for May 1

These are among the activities scheduled May 1-7 at the University of Wyoming:

Monday, May 1, 3:10 p.m. -- The UW Department of Geology and Geophysics Distinguished Lecturer Series presents Christy Till, an assistant professor at Arizona State University. She will discuss “Understanding Eruption Triggers at Yellowstone Caldera” in the S.H. Knight Geology Building, Room 216. Free.

Monday, May 1, 4:30 p.m. -- The UW College of Education presents Andrea Hoffmannová, an assistant professor at Palacký University in Olomouc, Czech Republic. She will discuss the perception of America in Central Europe in the Education Annex, Room 318. Free.

Monday, May 1, 7:30 p.m. -- The UW Department of Music presents the Happy Jacks in concert in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall. Free.

Tuesday, May 2, 6 p.m. -- Gallery 234 will host a reception for the exhibition “In the Distance” in the lower level of the Wyoming Union. Free.

Tuesday, May 2, 7 p.m. -- Porn Dies at 7220, a UW student group, presents a guest speaker from the national organization Fight the New Drug in the College of Business auditorium. Free.

Tuesday, May 2, 7 p.m. -- Planetarium show, “This Month's Sky.” Tickets cost $3 for students and $4 for non-students, Physical Sciences Building basement. Advance tickets are available in the Physical Sciences Building, Room 204.

Wednesday, May 3, noon -- The UW Art Museum will host “Lunchtime Conversations with Curators.” The museum is located in the Centennial Complex at 2111 Willett Drive. Free.

Thursday, May 4, 12:20 p.m. -- The UW Department of Botany Distinguished Speaker Series present Erika Edwards, a professor at Brown University. She will discuss “The Distinct Evolutionary Dynamics of C4 and CAM Photosynthesis” in the Berry Biodiversity Conservation Center, Room 138. Free.

Thursday, May 4, 7:30 p.m. -- The UW Symphony Orchestra presents “Romeo and Juliet” in the Performing Arts concert hall. Tickets cost $10 for the public; $7 for senior citizens; and $6 for students. Tickets are available at the Performing Arts box office and the Wyoming Union information desk, by calling (307) 766-6666 or going online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts.

Friday, May 5 -- Last day of UW classes for the spring semester.

Friday, May 5, 4:10 p.m. -- Karen Goldberg, a professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Washington, will give the UW Department of Chemistry’s annual Geoffrey Coates Lecture. She will discuss contributions from the Center for Enabling New Technologies through Catalysis. Her talk will be in the Classroom Building, Room 310. Free.

Friday, May 5, 5 p.m. -- The UW 7220 Entertainment’s Large Scale Events Committee presents the band Railroad Earth as part of Union Fest in Prexy’s Pasture. Free.

Friday, May 5, 7 p.m. -- The Environment and Natural Resources Club, the UW Biodiversity Institute and the Sierra Club-Wyoming Chapter present a screening of “Overburden,” a documentary film about coal mining, in the College of Agriculture auditorium. Free.

Friday, May 5, 7 p.m. -- UW Creative Writing Program MFA students will read from their theses at Night Heron Books, 107 E. Ivinson Ave. in Laramie. Free and open to the public.

Friday, May 5, 8 p.m. -- Planetarium show, “End-of-the-Year Celebration.” A free STAR Observatory tour (weather dependent) follows at 9 p.m. Tickets cost $3 for students and $4 for non-students, Physical Sciences Building basement. Advance tickets are available in the Physical Sciences Building, Room 204.

Friday, May 5, 8:30 p.m. -- This Just In, a UW improv troupe, will perform in Crane Studio in the Performing Arts Center. Free.

Friday, May 5, 11:50 p.m. -- The UW 7220 Entertainment’s Films Committee will present a screening of “Get Out” as part of Union Fest in the Wyoming Union Family Room. Free.

Saturday, May 6-Sunday, May 7, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. -- The UW Department of Theatre and Dance presents the 2017 Stage Combat Workshop in the Performing Arts Center. Tickets prices vary. Saturday, May 6, 3 p.m. -- Gamelan Candra Wyoga and UW Honors students will perform music and dance of Bali in the College of Arts and Sciences auditorium. A $5 donation is suggested.
