UW Undergraduate Research Day April 29

Nearly 500 University of Wyoming students will take part in the Wyoming Undergraduate Research Day Saturday, April 29.

Concurrent oral presentations are planned in UW’s Classroom Building beginning at 10 a.m. and concluding at 4 p.m. Poster presentations will take place in the Wyoming Union Family Room from 3:30-5:30 p.m.

UW and Wyoming’s community colleges provide many opportunities for undergraduates to participate in independent research projects across many disciplines. Undergraduate Research Day recognizes and celebrates the accomplishments of undergraduate student researchers.

Abstracts of all presentations will be published in a provided abstract book. Presentations are open to the public.

Undergraduate Research Day has become an important annual celebration of learning on the UW campus, says Bill Gern, who is retiring after serving for 23 years as UW vice president for research and economic development. The first Undergraduate Research Day had approximately 80 participating students, and over the years, 4,275 students have participated.

Gern says the success of the program is because each participating student had a faculty mentor involved in the research, making Undergraduate Research Day a “clear demonstration of how the university’s research missions are strongly coupled to its educational missions.”

“Undergraduate Research Day’s growth and success are fundamentally the result of students wanting to pursue problems that expand what is learned during an undergraduate career,” Gern adds. “Also fundamental is faculty members’ willingness to work one on one with these students. Such research allows students to use their education and work with real issues they will encounter in the world outside of the university.”

Among research topics to be presented are agriculture, business, education, engineering, health sciences, biological and physical sciences, mathematical sciences, social sciences, and the arts and humanities. Each student oral presentation is 15 minutes long, with a five-minute question/answer session following.

Chip Kobulnicky, UW Department of Physics and Astronomy professor, will give the Robert A. Jenkins Memorial Lecture during dinner later in the evening for student participants and their families. Jenkins was a nationally recognized scholar at UW from 1964-1996 in the Department of Zoology and Physiology.

Research Day is sponsored by the UW offices of Research and Economic Development, Student Affairs and Academic Affairs; UW colleges of Arts and Sciences, Agriculture and Natural Resources, Engineering and Applied Science, and Health Sciences; Wyoming IDeA Networks for Biomedical Research Excellence, the UW Honors Program, the McNair Scholars Program, Wyoming Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research and the Wyoming NASA Space Grant Consortium.
