UW Student from Upton Secures National Sigma Chi Internship

As his freshman year at the University of Wyoming has come to an end, Seth Jones already stands out as an accomplished young UW leader. Starting June 12, Jones will be the summer leadership intern at Sigma Chi national headquarters.

For the full-time internship, Jones will work as part of Sigma Chi’s Leadership Programs Team to develop and implement educational and leadership curriculum, primarily for Sigma Chi’s Balfour Leadership Training Workshop. He also will work as on-site staff support at this year’s workshop in August.

Securing this national internship was not the only prestigious opportunity to come of Jones’ first year at UW. During January and February, the student from Upton completed an internship with the Wyoming State Legislature, working alongside many of the state’s most prominent leaders, including directly with House Speaker Pro Tempore Donald Burkhart.

A communications major with a minor in music, Jones also is involved in student government as well as two choirs at UW, and has been selected as Gamma Xi’s 2017 delegate to the Sigma Chi Grand Chapter.

Jones says he hadn’t planned on joining a fraternity, but he was instantly hooked by the strong values of Sigma Chi at a recruitment event.

“The idea of having different temperaments, talents and convictions between members that could come together under the same ideals really spoke to me,” he says.

Sigma Chi, he says, has already had a profound impact on his leadership growth and successes.

“Most of my successes in college I could attribute to myself joining Sigma Chi,” he says. “Whether it be running for leadership positions in student government, applying for and getting into Horizons, or even applying for this internship, I don’t think I would have pushed myself for any of these opportunities without the help and support of those around me.”

According to Jones, his internship at Sigma Chi headquarters will be unlike anything he has ever done. He looks forward to the experience, and to finding out what further leadership opportunities lie ahead of him in his career. He is slated to graduate in 2020, after which he plans to attend graduate school in the field of administration.
