Memorial Service for Mark Greene July 10 at UW

A public memorial service for emeritus University of Wyoming American Heritage Center (AHC) director Mark Greene is planned Monday, July 10, at 11 a.m. in the Stock Growers Room of UW’s Centennial Complex.

Greene died June 21 in an automobile accident near Cheyenne.

Greene was the director of the AHC from 2002-2015 and was a leader in the archives profession.

“Mark transformed the AHC into a collection of national significance and made the AHC a highly regarded beacon of best practices and innovation,” says his successor, Bridget Burke. “Many on campus counted Mark as a friend, and those of us who do archival work now practice in a field that was transformed by his contributions.”

After earning an M.A. in U.S. history from the University of Michigan, Greene began his career as an archivist at Carleton College. He then served as curator of manuscripts acquisition at the Minnesota Historical Society and as the head of Research Center Programs at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Mich., before coming to UW in 2002.

Greene was a fellow and past president of the Society of American Archivists, which presented its Council Exemplary Service award to him upon his retirement in 2015.

The AHC (www.uwyo.edu/ahc) ranks among the largest nongovernmental repositories in the United States. In 2010, the AHC was recognized as one of the nation’s premier archives when it received the Society of American Archivists’ Distinguished Service Award. The AHC currently houses 75,000 cubic feet of materials, with 15,000 cubic feet remaining to welcome new collections.
