UW Geology Emeritus Professors Receive Honors

Three emeritus professors in the University of Wyoming’s Department of Geology and Geophysics have been recognized by national organizations.

Art Snoke received the Geological Society of America (GSA) Structural Geology and Tectonics Career Contribution Award; Scott Smithson was awarded the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) Outstanding Educator Award; and Randi Martinsen was noted in an American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) publication.

“These are richly deserved awards,” says Professor Carrick Eggleston, head of the Department of Geology and Geophysics. “Art, Scott and Randi truly are outstanding scientists and educators, and it’s wonderful to see them receive this recognition.”

Snoke’s award from the GSA goes to “an individual who throughout his/her career has made numerous distinguished contributions that have clearly advanced the science of structural geology or tectonics.”

Smithson’s award recognizes that “Smithson’s scientific contributions helped lead the University of Wyoming Department of Geology and Geophysics to distinction in geophysical imaging of the earth’s continental crust, and his training of many very talented students and postdoctoral associates over his career has had a far-reaching impact in furthering science and industry exploration successes.”

Martinsen is referenced in the AAPG publication, “The Heritage of the Petroleum Geologist,” second edition, along with 100 other internationally prominent scientists, including two astronauts.
