The University of Wyoming Department of Theatre and Dance will present “Outside Inside Downside Up,” a free vertical dance concert, Saturday, Aug. 26, and Sunday, Aug. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts (BCPA) Thrust Theatre.

Even though the performance is free, donations for the Laramie Food Bank will be taken at the door, either canned goods or cash.

Since 1998, vertical dance has been an end-of-summer favorite with local audiences, featuring performances at Vedauwoo, in the Berry Biodiversity Conservation Center, on the outside of the Physical Sciences Building and, now, in the new Thrust Theatre in the BCPA.

Created by UW Professors Margaret Wilson and Neil Humphrey, the site-specific vertical dance choreography features UW students dancing both near, to and far away from the audience.

“We are looking forward to performing in the Thrust Theatre,” Wilson says. “We feel we can create an environment where audiences can see the performers in a variety of locations, both on stage and in the audience space.”

Lights Along the Shore, a trio composed of Rod Garnett (flute), Blake McGee (bass clarinet) and Lisa Rickard (keyboard/piano), will perform during the production, collaborating with the dancers to create a musical score featuring original compositions and adaptations of musical works from around the world.

“We are excited to be working with Lights Along the Shore again,” Wilson says. “It is a pleasure to collaborate with these artists in the development of new ideas and pieces.

“We look forward to kicking off the UW Theatre and Dance 2017-18 season with this event, and plan on returning to Vedauwoo for performances next August,” Wilson adds.
