Cellist Barbara Thiem and pianist Theresa Bogard will be featured in the University of Wyoming Department of Music’s Faculty Recital Series Sunday, Oct. 8, at 3 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts recital hall. The concert is free and open to the public.

Thiem and Bogard are celebrating 25 years of collaboration and will perform pieces by Gyorgy Lygeti, Igor Stravinski, Franz Schubert and Sergei Rachmaninoff.

Thiem is an internationally acclaimed cellist and has given performances throughout Europe and the United States. She teaches cello and coaches chamber music at Colorado State University (CSU) in Fort Collins, Colo. Thiem teaches in the pre-college chamber music program, administers the Summer Academy of Schloss in Ort, Austria, and is a member of the Mendelssohn Trio.

Thiem received degrees from Cologne, Germany, and Indiana University. In Germany, Thiem studied with avant-garde cellist Siegried Palm. While studying at Indiana assisting Professor Janos Starker, she received the coveted Performer’s Award.

She has been involved in research for the Center of Biomedical Research in Music Therapy at CSU and has published an article on the translation of “Gerhard Mantel’s Cello Technique.” She has written a variety of articles focusing on good posture and practicing habits, which appeared in the American String Teachers Association and Suzuki Journals.

Thiem has recorded for multiple radio stations and has produced several CDs, ranging from Bach Suites cello solo, complete works by Felix Draeseke, to cello and organ pieces with organist Robert Cavarra.

Bogard is an active performer combining varied interests in historical performance practice, contemporary music, chamber music and the music of women composers. She has performed in solo and chamber music programs in the United States, New Zealand, Australia, Austria, the Netherlands, Italy, Mexico, Bolivia, Brazil, Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, China, Taiwan and Singapore. She is featured on a recording of solo piano works by Louise Talma.

A much sought-after collaborative pianist, Bogard has performed with a variety of musicians, including UW Department of Music faculty instructors.
