Nominations Accepted for UW Student Commencement Speaker

October 2, 2017

One University of Wyoming graduating senior will be selected to speak during UW’s fall commencement ceremony Dec. 16, and the offices of President Laurie Nichols and Provost Kate Miller are accepting nominations for that honor through Oct. 20.

The university will have a single, university-wide fall commencement ceremony in 2017 for the first time in many years, and the student speaker will be one of two featured speakers at the event.

UW faculty, staff and student organizations are invited to nominate students for the honor. Nominees must be graduating seniors in the fall or summer of 2017.

Nominations should be sent to Associate Vice Provost Anne Alexander at aalex@uwyo.edu in the form of a single-page Word or PDF document detailing the nominees’ achievements in each of these areas:

-- Record of academic excellence.

-- Ability to write and speak effectively to a large audience.

-- Demonstrated leadership in student organizations, student activities, public service or other activities that involve speaking to groups.

-- Representative of the best qualities of UW graduates.

Each nomination should indicate that the student nominee is willing and able to participate as the commencement speaker.

A fall commencement speaker selection committee will choose the student, with the timeline as follows:

-- Deadline for nominations, Oct. 20.

-- Committee meets and selects top candidates, solicits draft speeches, Oct. 23.

-- Deadline for top candidates to submit draft speeches, Nov. 6.

-- Committee meets to review draft speeches, Nov. 7-10.

-- Interviews with top candidates, Nov. 13-16.

-- Student speaker selected and informed, Nov. 17.

-- Student speaker works with faculty to polish speech, Nov. 27-Dec. 8.

The selection committee will include two faculty members, two staff members, two students, one representative of the president’s office and one representative of the provost’s office.
