Public Meeting on UW Science Initiative Building Exterior Nov. 1

Members of the public will have an opportunity to view plans and offer input on the exterior design of the University of Wyoming’s Science Initiative building during a community meeting Wednesday, Nov. 1.

The meeting is scheduled at 6 p.m. in the Berry Biodiversity Conservation Center auditorium.

Under a policy adopted by the UW Board of Trustees, an exterior design advisory committee was appointed to guide the planning for the new facility’s appearance. The board policy calls for a community meeting to seek public input on the building’s exterior design.

Renderings of the exterior of the planned facility have been created, in consultation with the Science Initiative exterior design advisory committee, and will be available for review before and after the community meeting. The session will include a presentation on the building’s exterior design and an opportunity to ask questions about the project.

Members of the advisory committee are UW Trustee Kermit Brown, state Sen. Chris Rothfuss, community member Phil Nicholas, Vice President for Administration Bill Mai and faculty member Cynthia Weinig.

UW’s Science Initiative aims to, among other things, integrate education and research. The Science Initiative building will help the university achieve top-tier status among university science programs nationwide. The building also will provide modern laboratories to achieve maximum flexibility and adaptability to accommodate future changes; include classrooms in an active-learning configuration; and increase public/student/faculty interactions in planned “collision spaces.”

The exterior has been designed in compliance with UW’s historic preservation plan and long-range development plan, which call for elements to preserve UW’s classical architectural tradition.

The total project cost is $103 million. Construction is expected to begin in late 2018 or early 2019, with building completion in late 2020 or early 2021.
