A family physician in Cody was recently selected as the 2017 Outstanding Alumnus of the Year for the Division of Medical Education at the University of Wyoming.

Adam Peters, who graduated in 2004 from the University of Washington through the Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho (WWAMI) Medical Education Program, received the honor during the College of Health Sciences Distinguished Alumni Reception Oct. 27. Peters is currently vice chief of staff at West Park Hospital in Cody.

The outstanding alumnus is chosen based upon his or her contributions to clinical instruction of WWAMI students, outreach into local communities and contributions to Wyoming, says Tim Robinson, director of the WWAMI program.

“Dr. Peters has been involved in clinical teaching since coming back to Wyoming to practice in 2007,” Robinson says. “He receives outstanding evaluations from students and constantly volunteers to take on students in their clinical rotations.”

Peters, born and raised in Rock Springs, is active in Cody, where he now lives. He is medical director for the Buffalo Bill Scout Camp; is physician liaison for the Children’s Resource Center; physician for the Quake hockey team; and works at the Heart Mountain Volunteer Medical Clinic. He also previously volunteered as a varsity scout coach for the Boy Scouts of America in Cody.

The WWAMI program reserves 20 seats each year for qualified Wyoming residents. Students accepted to the program spend their first year on the UW campus and the second year at the University of Washington School of Medicine. The third and fourth years are spent at selected clinical sites throughout the WWAMI region.
