Sheridan Wins Third Straight Class 4A Championship

November 11, 2017 -- Sheridan’s Aaron Sessions returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, then made a huge interception with three minutes left in the game, as the Broncs fended off Casper Natrona’s second-half surge to take the Class 4A state championship, 28-14.

It is the third straight title for Sheridan and the school’s 26th overall, as one of the smallest schools in 4A defeated Wyoming’s largest-enrollment high school in a rematch of the 2016 championship game. It was the Broncs’ sixth straight win over the Mustangs.

Natrona closed the gap to 14-7 following a fake punt and unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Sheridan with a little over four minutes left in the third period. But Sheridan forced a fumble inside Natrona’s 10-yard line just before the end of the third, and the Broncs capitalized to go up 21-7.

Natrona’s Brett Brenton then scored on a hook-and-lateral play to make the score 21-14. The Mustangs were driving with about three minutes left in the game, but Sessions returned his interception from deep in Sheridan’s red zone to inside the Natrona 10, and quarterback Aaron Woodward ran it in to make the final score 28-14.

Sheridan finished the season 12-0, while Natrona ended at 10-2, its only two losses coming to the Broncs.

From his defensive safety position, Fornstrom also knocked away a final Hail Mary pass by Big Horn quarterback Quinn McCafferty to seal the victory.
