UW Art Museum to Feature Student Art at Spring Opening Reception

The University of Wyoming Art Museum will feature the 43rd annual Juried UW Student Exhibition during a free reception to celebrate all new exhibitions for the spring semester. The opening reception is Friday, Feb. 16, from 6-8 p.m., with the student awards ceremony beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The 43rd annual Juried UW Student Exhibition is open to any student enrolled at UW during the current academic year regardless of area of study. This includes any in-state student enrolled through UW distance courses. The exhibition is on view through May 12.

The student exhibition is juried each year by an out-of-state juror. This year’s exhibition was selected by Pam Campanaro, director of galleries at the University of Northern Colorado. She reviewed submissions by nearly 200 students. A number of purchase and cash awards will be announced at 6:30 p.m. during the Feb. 16 reception.

“Indian Country: The Art of David Bradley” features work by Bradley, who is known for creating narrative artworks that present a socio-political critique of contemporary Native American art in the art world. The exhibition was developed by the Museum of Indian Art and Culture, and organized by GuestCurator services. It is on view through July 14.

“Living Artifacts: Evolving Traditions and Cultural Perseverance” is on display through May 12. Drawn from the Art Museum’s permanent collection, “Living Artifacts” features artworks by indigenous artists that reflect how the oral traditions, symbols and figures of a culture evolve when they become sought after by collectors of indigenous art. Works include netsuke figurines from Japan, sculptures from Easter Island and kachina dolls from the American West.

“Warhol in Wyoming: The Andy Warhol Photographic Legacy Gift” exhibition includes over 100 Polaroid photographs and gelatin silver prints donated by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts to the UW Art Museum in 2008. The exhibition marks the 10th anniversary of the gift. “Warhol in Wyoming” features a wide selection of portraits, celebrity snapshots and party photos produced by Warhol throughout his career. The exhibition is on view through May 26.

“Jon Lodge: Interface” features artworks that emphasize the interaction between systems and materials. Lodge uses the stochastic process -- a planned system of randomness -- as a starting point in many of his works. He appropriates elements from sound/music composition and print media/image reproduction to create artworks exhibiting components from these disparate sources. The exhibition is on view through Aug. 11.

The Pat Guthrie Special Exhibitions Teaching Gallery is on view through May 12. The teaching gallery model integrates original art into UW coursework curriculum and presents exhibitions available to students and the public throughout the semester. Working closely with faculty, courses this semester are: “Art/English/Gender and Women’s Studies 3710 -- Gender and the Humanities”; “Energy Resource Management and Development 2500 -- Communication Across Topics in Energy”; “Classics/English/Theatre 4230 -- Greek Tragedy”; and “Art 3112 -- TYPE: Text, Image and Narrative.”

Through its “Museum as Classroom” approach, the UW Art Museum places art at the center of learning for all ages. Located in the Centennial Complex at 2111 Willett Drive in Laramie, the museum is open Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday hours are extended to 7 p.m. February through April and September through November.
