The University of Wyoming Art Museum will host “Panel Discussion: Living Artifacts” Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The panel will discuss “Living Artifacts: Evolving Traditions and Cultural Perseverance,” an exhibition on view through Saturday, May 12. Darrell Jackson, an associate professor in the UW College of Law; Sarah Strauss, a professor of cultural anthropology in the UW Department of Anthropology; and Nicole Crawford, curator of collections at the UW Art Museum, will share their reflections on the exhibition.

The panel discussion will be a starting point for student and audience dialogues about the ethical and legal issues of collecting ethnographic artifacts, and how this process affects the collector, the museum, the artist and the culture.

“There is a current trend for museums to become more transparent on how collections are acquired, and this panel will highlight implications of collecting ethnographic objects from three very distinct points of view,” Crawford says.

For more information about the Art Museum, call (307) 766-6622, visit the website at www.uwyo.edu/artmuseum, or follow the museum on Facebook and Instagram.

Through its “Museum as Classroom” approach, the UW Art Museum places art at the center of learning for all ages. Located in the Centennial Complex at 2111 Willett Drive in Laramie, the museum is open Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday hours are extended to 7 p.m. February through April and September through November. Admission is free.
