UW Nordic Ski Team Members Place in Top 10 at Nationals

Two members of the University of Wyoming Nordic ski teams earned All-America honors Tuesday at the U.S. Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA) Collegiate National Championships at Lake Placid, N.Y., home of the 1980 Winter Olympics.

Laramie’s Ella DeWolf had a strong finish, placing ninth overall in the opening 7.5km freestyle race for her first time on the awards stand at the USCSA championships. Mason Vincent, also from Laramie, skied to seventh place in the men’s competition to earn All-America honors along with DeWolf.

“All our young skiers performed very well, and our upperclassmen did what they needed to be close in the points,” UW head co-head Coach Christi Boggs.

As a team, the Cowgirls are ranked sixth, just one point out of the top five.

“This young team is getting their nationals legs and should improve throughout the week,” Boggs says.

Leann Bentley, of Laramie, skied into 18th place, and the rest of the UW women stacked into the top 30 in a strong field, Boggs adds.

Trevor Willoughby, of Casper, placed 11th, just eight seconds out of the top 10. The Cowboys are currently tied for fifth place in the men’s team standings, 14 points out of third place and 16 points from the runner-up position.

Action picks up again Wednesday with a classic sprint race, and Friday is the 15km classic mass start. The team race concludes the week Saturday.
