UW Rodeo Teams Struggle at Eastern Wyoming

For the first time this season, the University of Wyoming women’s team is no longer among the top two clubs in the Central Rocky Mountain Region (CRMR) standings.

The Cowgirls, for the first time this season, failed to get on the scoreboard and were shut out during last weekend’s Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) rodeo in Torrington. That poor showing enabled the host Lancers to overtake the UW women for second place in the CRMR team standings by just two points.

EWC is in sole possession of the runner-up position with 1,480 points, while the Cowgirls dropped a spot to third with 1,478 points. Seasonlong leader Gillette College tops the field with 2,800 points, with just three remaining rodeos left in the spring season.

The host EWC women won their own home event with 340 points -- 100 points better than second-place Gillette College.

After winning last weekend’s Gillette College’s rodeo, the UW men came crashing down hard, managing just 85 points, all by just one team member. Brock Wahlert scored 85 points in bareback riding. The Casper senior was fourth in the average after recording the second-best mark in the long go.

“Yes, it sure was a tough weekend for our teams,” says Lydia Coe, UW interim head coach.

Casper College dominated the latest CRMR rodeo with 510 points and jumped to first place in the regional standings with 2,560 points. The T-Birds hold a slim 25-point lead over runner-up Sheridan College, the CRMR defending team champion. Gillette College is third in the team standings with 2,480 points.

Teams have the Easter weekend off; the next scheduled CRMR rodeo will be hosted by Colorado State University in Fort Collins April 6-8.
