Samuel Mallory, of Cheyenne, was among four finalists for the 2018 Tobin Memorial Award as the University of Wyoming’s outstanding graduating man.

The annual award is based on academic excellence and achievement, service to the university, participation and leadership in the community and campus activities, and citizenship qualities. He is the son of Kevin and Shawn Mallory.

Gabe Selting, of Laramie, received the Tobin Award, while Sophia Kwende, of Cameroon, was named the Rosemarie Martha Spitaleri Award recipient as the outstanding graduating woman during a recent ceremony honoring all the nominees.

Mallory will graduate with a degree in energy resource management and development, with a concentration in professional land management and a minor in honors.

Mallory says he has been able to contribute to the community with his multiple roles and is thankful for the opportunity.

“I cannot say with certainty that I have been able to pay back the debt of gratitude I owe to the University of Wyoming, but I would like to think that I have made a good dent,” he says. “My favorite contribution, however, has been in recognizing the incredible faculty and staff that have made lasting impacts on mine and my peers’ education.”

A nominator was continually impressed with Mallory’s dedication, commitment and professionalism.

“Mr. Mallory continues to lead with a maturity beyond his years and demonstrates excellent character on a daily basis, with strong and sound ethical decision-making,” the nominator says.

Another nominator recognizes the greatness in Mallory and his multiple roles as a small-business owner, hockey player, and professional land management scholar and group leader.

“I suspect that Mr. Mallory is going to succeed at whatever he chooses to do in his life and, perhaps more importantly, that he will do so in an honorable, kind, ethical and decent manner,” the nominator says.

Mallory has accepted a land professional job at Shell Oil Co. in Houston, Texas.
