Renae Wollman, from Huron, S.D., was among six finalists for the Rosemarie Martha Spitaleri Award as the University of Wyoming’s outstanding graduating woman.

The annual award, established in 1964, recognizes a student for exhibiting the finest leadership, academic integrity and citizenship qualities.

Sophia Kwende, of Cameroon, was named the Rosemarie Martha Spitaleri Award recipient, while Gabe Selting, of Laramie, received the Tobin Award, as the outstanding graduating man during a recent ceremony honoring all the nominees.

Wollman, who will graduate with a degree in physiology and a minor in honors, says UW gave her opportunities to learn and expand on personal and academic levels.

“My experiences at the University of Wyoming have shaped my life into an endless field of possibilities,” Wollman says. “I look forward to creating a future in Wyoming by one day practicing as a physician and continuing my involvement with the university and the surrounding community.”

One of Wollman’s nominators says she is an inspiration, given what she has achieved and where she started.

“I am not sure Renae realizes this, but I believe that one reason she is a gifted teacher is because she can empathize with a wide variety of students and help them learn difficult concepts,” the nominator says. “Renae clearly has an outstanding academic record, contributes to UW and displays leadership, but I feel strongly that her greatest quality is her incredible character.”

Another nominator says Wollman is a successful student but also a fantastic university and community citizen.

“This is the result of her own diligence and initiative, both within and outside the university. She excels in higher education,” the nominator says. “She is especially intellectually curious, seeking to always learn and improve, not only her life but those of others around her.”

Wollman has plans to attend the University of Washington’s medical program with WWAMI in the fall.
