Sage Grouse Presentation to Kick Off 2018 Harlow Summer Seminars

A University of Wyoming researcher will discuss the effectiveness of Wyoming’s sage grouse core-area strategy to kick off the 2018 Harlow Summer Seminars at the University of Wyoming National Park Service (UW-NPS) Research Center Thursday, June 21. The center is located at the AMK Ranch in Grand Teton National Park.

Jeff Beck, associate professor of rangeland wildlife habitat restoration ecology in the Department of Ecosystem Science and Management, will speak at 6:30 p.m. at the AMK Ranch, located north of Leeks Marina. A barbecue, at a cost of $5 per person, will take place at 5:30 p.m. Reservations are not required.

The Wyoming core-area strategy was established in 2008 by gubernatorial executive order. It’s intended to provide greater protection for breeding sage grouse across the state in response to concerns about the potential listing of the bird under the federal Endangered Species Act. Beck and his colleagues have evaluated the effectiveness of the strategy using grouse telemetry data, lek counts and energy development data.

Beck, who earned his Ph.D. from the University of Idaho, began his work at UW in 2006 as a postdoctoral researcher and joined the UW faculty in 2007. His research interests lie in wildlife habitat ecology and restoration ecology, with a focus on restoring the functionality and structure of wildlife habitats in disturbed rangeland systems, particularly sagebrush habitats. He has worked extensively with private landowners, the energy industry, and state and federal wildlife and land management agencies.

The UW-NPS Research Center provides a base for university faculty members and government scientists from throughout North America to conduct research in the diverse aquatic and terrestrial environments of Grand Teton National Park and the greater Yellowstone area.

Formerly called the AMK Ranch Talk Series, the Harlow Summer Seminars program is named after retired UW Department of Zoology and Physiology Professor Hank Harlow, who helped make the UW-NPS Research Center a significant center for research and community outreach. Harlow began the popular weekly public seminars during the summer months.
