A seasoned scholar-practitioner who has directed international education programming at several public universities has been selected as the University of Wyoming’s first associate vice provost for global engagement.

Anthony “Tony” Ogden, most recently the executive director of education abroad and exchanges at Michigan State University, will begin his new position at UW July 31. He will oversee UW’s new Global Engagement Office, created as part of UW’s strategic plan, “Breaking Through: 2017-2022,” which calls for expanded recruitment of international students and greater engagement of faculty and students in international education. He will have an academic appointment in the College of Education’s School of Counseling, Leadership, Advocacy and Design.

“Dr. Ogden brings a great deal of experience and expertise to this important new role at UW,” Provost Kate Miller says. “We are excited for him to come aboard and lead our internationalization efforts, which are crucial for Wyoming’s university to optimally serve our students, the state and our global community. I am confident that Dr. Ogden’s experience, track record of success and innovative vision will solidify our position among the nation’s elite universities for comprehensive internationalization.”

For nearly 25 years, Ogden has pursued an active role in international education leadership and management, which has included roles in Japan, Vietnam and Cameroon. At Pennsylvania State University, he provided oversight in the administration of international programming and worked in cooperation with faculty and staff of all 24 Penn State campuses located throughout Pennsylvania. In his home state of Kentucky, Ogden served as the executive director of education abroad and exchanges at the University of Kentucky. Most recently at Michigan State University (MSU), he directed one of the largest education abroad offices in the country, providing oversight of diverse programming to support the nearly 3,000 MSU students who earn credit abroad each year.

A two-time Fulbright recipient, Ogden holds a dual-title Ph.D. from Penn State in educational theory and policy and comparative and international education; a master’s degree in international and intercultural management from the School for International Training in Vermont; and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Berea College. Ogden has over 50 publications to his credit, including a recent co-edited book on the issue of scholar-practitioners in international education.

“I am thrilled to be moving to the University of Wyoming,” Ogden says. “It will be an honor to serve UW in this capacity and to work in close partnership with Dr. Miller, the Global Engagement Office team and UW faculty and staff to refine existing programming and develop new initiatives that respond to current global affairs and trends in international education.”

UW’s Global Engagement Office includes the Education Abroad Office, formerly the Office of Study Abroad; the International Students and Scholars Office; and the English Language Center.
